Have you ever put together a jigsaw puzzle? I explored the definition of a jigsaw puzzle and found THE answer on Wikipedia.
A jigsaw puzzle is a tiling puzzle that requires the assembly of numerous small, often oddly shaped, interlocking and tessellating pieces. Each piece usually has a small part of a picture on it; when complete, a jigsaw puzzle produces a complete picture.
If you attended the closing session of the 2011 GSIS Conference, I spoke about a jigsaw puzzle. As the group of Georgia Student Information System users, we are all part of the state-wide puzzle which paints a collection of a tremendous amount of data.
Let’s glance back over the definition:
Oddly Shaped – This is an interesting part of the definition of a jigsaw puzzle. The school systems over the state of Georgia range from a simple structure to complicated schools-within-schools to Alternative Schools.
Interlocking – Your state-reporting can and often does affect other school district’s state reporting. This puzzle concept demonstrates how we are force to “interlock” with our fellow school districts.
Tessellating (Tiling) – Have you ever notice how a jigsaw puzzle will not have any overlapping pieces or gaps in the puzzle? The pieces must fit together in order to complete the puzzle. Sometimes, our neighboring pieces are forced to work together to ensure the pieces fit. Similarly, SIS folks have to combine our minds together to ensure the most proper and appropriate solutions in state reporting requirements.
With your attendance and involvement, our GSIS puzzle is complete. The GSIS Board Members welcome you to the 2012 GSIS Conference in historic Savannah. We hope you will gain valuable knowledge from vendors as well as other SIS users from across our state. We also would like to express our gratitude to the Georgia Department of Education for their continued participation through their presentations and presence at the 2012 GSIS Conference. And, of course, enjoy your evenings in exciting, downtown Savannah…just a ferry ride away.
